Silver Band
crowned South of Ireland Champions
Arklow Silver Band were crowned Southern Champions at the
South of Ireland Championships held in Clonakilty on the 6th July
2002. A total of 15 bands, both Brass and Concert, took part in the competition
with eight bands in the senior section in which Arklow competed.
The two adjudicators, Dr. Joseph Ryan and Eibhlin Grant, had
high praise for Arklow’s playing saying that the Cossack March was the best
march of the competition. They also had high praise for the playing of Anthony
McCarthy who played the demanding Demelza as a Soprano Solo. Finally they said
they thoroughly enjoyed Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, which the Band played as
their final number.
As an added bonus the Band also won the Best Bass Section of
the competition with Eilish Nolan, Brian Harty, Michael Kennedy, Cillian Wood
and Paul Lyons playing exceptionally well.
